*Technique Classes are the center of our dance program at Solstice Studio. It is here that the dancer builds stamina, Bellydance movement, East Coast Tribal Styling, and integration of steps into dance-movement. Technique classes share a curriculum, common goal, and methods for expanding the movement capacity of the body.
**Specialty classes are meant to
supplement the dancers' training. The specialty classes are additions
to the program at Solstice Studio, meant to to add further depth to your
core training.
What style of bellydance is this? This is not your traditional bellydance that you may see in a restaurant, (although many of our instructors are originally trained in this style: Egyptian, Turkish, and American Cabaret). Our style is called East Coast Tribal. It falls under the "Tribal Fusion" umbrella of Modern Bellydance. Check out this video to see if this is the style that you are interested in (made by core members of our studio): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-qYN710EuI

In Goddess Dance Sera Solstice guides you through the basics of bellydance presented in short dance combinations. You will be inspired by the beauty of the flowing, organic movement that you will learn. Having practiced and performed bellydance through both her pregnancies, Sera has selected moves that are gentle, energizing, and healing for women in all stages of pregnancy, including post-partum. Sera demonstrates the movements for the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy, while her dancer assistants - Jessica and Megan - show the movements for early pregnancy and post-partum.
Sera’s program teaches dance technique for pregnancy, offering the detailed explanation of bellydance moves, which groups of muscles to activate, and how to integrate the birthing and root muscles into your dance. Sera starts with a gentle warmup, stretch, and muscle conditioning workout, and goes on to demonstrate and explain step-by-step groups of bellydance movements, such as lower and upper body circular, undulating and infinity-loop moves, and gentle percussive hipwork. She teaches dance combinations that come together into a hypnotic, graceful, and energizing dance, practiced in a special dance-along section. The Meditation section of Sera’s program addresses the emotional and experiential aspects of pregnancy and birth. Sera guides you through two movement meditation sessions helping you to connect on a deeper level to the physical experience of pregnancy and your baby. This meditation will also support confidence in your body, and help you to prepare emotionally and mentally for the experience of giving birth. One of the sessions is designed for the onset of labor. It assists you in establishing full trust in your body and descending deep into your physical self to discover and nourish your strength, relax your mind and body, and allow the birth to happen.

Lunar Bellydance interprets and teaches dance as language. Even the basic movements are introduced as units of meaning that fit into phrases and prompt the release of expressivity. Each movement holds an opportunity for the dancer to open, unfold, search within, process, and let go, connecting to a deeper self and to her true desires, learning to love herself and ultimately strengthening the link between self and movement.
Lunar is of the night, of the inner-self. Lunar is often fluid, isolated and ethereal. It is the dance of self-healing, self-knowledge, self-love, of inner-searching, dreamwork, and magic.
The program opens with the East Coast Tribal Essential Movement Practice, including warmup, technique review, and meditation. The flow of movement continues with the Essential Lunar Armwork section and the signature East Coast Tribal Essential Hipwork, and then culminates with footwork, hipwork, and undulations movement drills that prepare you for the 4 combinations taught later in the program. An extended movement flow is the key element of the Solstice method of daily muscle conditioning and deep technique work. You will enjoy non-stop movement to evocative cutting-edge world music electronica.
The four elemental movement combinations - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth - are demonstrated by Sera and the Solstice Ensemble - first at a slow tempo, and then up to speed. In addition, Sera offers a detailed breakdown of each step. A practice flow section allows you to join Sera and the dancers of the Solstice Ensemble in multiple repetitions of all four combinations.

Sera Solstice develops and extends the East Coast Tribal bellydance style with an intense and challenging repertoire of movement infused with the solar energy of grace, confidence, and self-acceptance. Sera's program is designed to enrich your bellydance practice by adding extension and full-body movement to balance the traditional focus on isolations in bellydance instruction and technique drills. Solar movement promotes a high level of dance technique, balance control, precision in transitions, and stamina.
Solar is expansive, energetic, projective. It includes a lot of travel steps, and reaches outward. It contains warrior energy: it's about action and the dancer's connection to the world and the people around her. Solar is the dance of abundance, energy, power, passion, sexuality, physicality, confrontation, resolve, and transformation.

Foundations of Bellydance: East Coast Tribal is a beginner / advanced beginner instructional program developed by Sera Solstice. New York City-based performer and instructor of Tribal Fusion bellydance, Sera is the creator of the East Coast Tribal bellydance style, characterized by intense multi-layer hipwork, serpentine full-body movement, deep emotive power and story-telling flow. Sera's program includes a 30-minute muscle-conditioning workout introducing foundation movements of bellydance technique, combined with two meditation sessions promoting relaxation and a focus on body awareness and motivation.
In the TECHNIQUE AND COMBINATIONS section you will experience 50 minutes of non-stop movement. Sera teaches challenging, upbeat combinations using the Movement Flow method: A continuous series of movement repetitions to infuse dance technique in your muscle memory. Each combination is first demonstrated by Sera and student dancers from her Solstice Studio in New York. Then, accompanied by the Solstice Ensemble, Sera introduces elements of bellydance technique and builds each combination, gradually adding layers of movement: Hipwork, upper body articulations, arms patterns, and footwork. The combinations explore five areas of East Coast Tribal technique:
1. Arms strengthening & the development of gracefulness
2. Upper body articulation & strengthening
3. Hipwork fundamentals & lower-body toning
4. Weight shift development, footwork, hipwork
5. Hip undulations, smooth hipwork
Foundations of Bellydance: East Coast Tribal is designed to be used as a dance practice companion. Regular work with this program will increase your strength, flexibility, muscle control and stamina. Bellydance movement will become an integrated, natural expression of your body.

East Coast Tribal bellydance blends sensual, fluid movement with sharp percussive accents evoking the flair of urban modernity. It resonates with exotic echoes of the world's ancient dances and bears a touch of the dark cyber-age mystique.

Each program teaches 3 dances by 3 instructors. Dance styles presented range from Classic Bellydance to Fusion, Tribal, and Gothic. The instructional level of all three DVDs is intermediate-advanced.
Each choreography conjures up an evocative archetypal image, and emphasizes story-telling through dance. In addition to a full breakdown of every choreography, each segment includes a demonstration of each dance, as well as a full theater performance in costume.

The artists and troupes featured in this program come from across the US and each is renowned for their unique style of dance, innovative beyond the technical characteristics of the larger style of movement they represent, such as cabaret, tribal, or other genres of contemporary bellydance.

East Coast Tribal is a movement discipline, a dance-style, and a perspective: grounded in Bellydance, with influences of Hip hop, Modern Dance, and Martial Arts. East Coast Tribal does not claim tradition or even innovation. It simply presents itself as an honest expression and response to current times, emotions, and influences. East Coast Tribalists practice a conscious rebellion from Orientalism as a means of respect for the cultures of which Bellydance has risen, cultures of which many modern Bellydancers could never truly claim to represent. East Coast Tribalists seek to depart from tradition, borders, rivers, disciplines, definitions, trends, and labels. Tribalistas seek mastery of tools for expression through physical movement, reaching for a new language, and how to speak this language, which is non-verbal, using the body as it's medium. Bellydance is the root form of expression of East Coast Tribal, as Bellydance holds the story of the body and the history of women, and is a powerful means of healing and celebrating life, and improving the physical well-being. East Coast Tribalistas use performance as a means of self-confrontation and celebration, creating a marker in the dancers timeline as a reminder of strengths. East Coast Tribal was first showcased in the 2006 release of the instructional Bellydance DVD, East Coast Tribal, produced by World Dance New York, this dance style is given it's name through performances by Solstice Dance Ensemble, led by choreographer Sera Solstice, and the instruction offered at Solstice Studio in New York City. Musical collaborations are a distinctive element of East Coast Tribal, with artists of Sub Swara, Djinn, and Chronomad. East Coast Tribal performances are usually highly choreographed, and are approached as a language form. Dancers continuously search for new ways to reflect their world, both outside and inside, through performance. Movements are typically bold, aggressive, expansive, contrasting with pop'n lock elements.
