East Coast Tribal is a movement discipline, a dance-style, and a perspective: grounded in Bellydance, with influences of Hip hop, Modern Dance, and Martial Arts. East Coast Tribal does not claim tradition or even innovation. It simply presents itself as an honest expression and response to current times, emotions, and influences. East Coast Tribalists practice a conscious rebellion from Orientalism as a means of respect for the cultures of which Bellydance has risen, cultures of which many modern Bellydancers could never truly claim to represent. East Coast Tribalists seek to depart from tradition, borders, rivers, disciplines, definitions, trends, and labels. Tribalistas seek mastery of tools for expression through physical movement, reaching for a new language, and how to speak this language, which is non-verbal, using the body as it's medium. Bellydance is the root form of expression of East Coast Tribal, as Bellydance holds the story of the body and the history of women, and is a powerful means of healing and celebrating life, and improving the physical well-being. East Coast Tribalistas use performance as a means of self-confrontation and celebration, creating a marker in the dancers timeline as a reminder of strengths. East Coast Tribal was first showcased in the 2006 release of the instructional Bellydance DVD, East Coast Tribal, produced by World Dance New York, this dance style is given it's name through performances by Solstice Dance Ensemble, led by choreographer Sera Solstice, and the instruction offered at Solstice Studio in New York City. Musical collaborations are a distinctive element of East Coast Tribal, with artists of Sub Swara, Djinn, and Chronomad. East Coast Tribal performances are usually highly choreographed, and are approached as a language form. Dancers continuously search for new ways to reflect their world, both outside and inside, through performance. Movements are typically bold, aggressive, expansive, contrasting with pop'n lock elements.
