Question: "I am currently very new to the studio and not sure yet if I am ready to
perform, but I'd like to try to participate, any advice?"
Solstice: "You are encouraged to perform if it is your desire. There is always the option to back out of performing if you feel that you are not ready."
Question: "What is the location of the performance?"Solstice: Location is not yet established. It could be Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens. The performance space may seat between 50 and 500.
Question: "I am currently in Beginner II, can I participate in the Beginner III level performance?"
Solstice: It is recomended that you participate in the Beginner II level performance.
Question: "I want to take classes, and my only available time is during a performance class, but I am not interested in performing, can I still take class?"
Solstice: You will need to wait until the following session, when all performance classes turn into technique classes again. Performance classes are for those who are focused primarily on performance.
Question: "Can I participate in more then one performance class?"
Solstice: Yes! as many as you want. But there is a chance you will be performing back-to-back without a break inbetween 2 pieces. It is highly recommended that you
participate in multiple performance classes as we only provide this opportunity twice a year.
Question: "I have missed multiple classes but I think I can still perform."
Solstice: These situations will be taken on a case-by-case basis. Most often, the class depends on your attendance just as much as you depend on your class. Your class
needs you to be present, and your teacher needs to know that you are on the same page as everyone else. Do not expect to be able to participate in the show if you have missed multiple classes.
Question: "I want to participate in the performance session, but I know that I will miss 3 of the 7 classes, can I still participate?"
Solstice: I recommend that you move to a technique class and wait until the next performance series to participate. You will be missing valuable information in each class-meeting if you are absent. There is no way, or time, to get back what you have missed. Your teacher needs your full dedication for this 7-week session.
"What do I wear at the performance, do I have to buy a costume?"
Our general attire for performance is a black base (pants/skirt top) with silver accents. Our default look has come to be exotic-goth-punk. You are encouraged to be creative in your costuming. Please try to avoid looking cabaret/ traditional bellydancer. No plastic sequins (unless they are small accents), chiffon, pastel colors, rhinestones. Think instead, heavy metals, rich dyes, dark colors, earthy fabrics, punk hair, large chunky jewelry, very dark make-up, bold and powerful. See some of the photos on this page.
Question: "I cant come to the dress rehearsal, and I just now found out, and it is 1 week before the performance session. I have learned the choreography and I know I will be okay to perform, can I still perform?"
Solstice: No. All performers must attend the dress-rehearsl, on-time, for the full time
Question: "I have enrolled in the performance series, but due to my absenses, I don't think I can perform with my group. Can I get a refund."
Solstice: Sorry, but there are no refunds given. Our classes run based upon the numbers at the onset of the session. There will be no refunds or make-up classes for the final week of the performance series. Your enrollment in the 7-week session is with the understanding and dedication to attend the full session.
"I will be late to the performance, dress rehearsal, or I will need to leave the performance early, can you tell me when my group is performing so that I can
leave/arrive right before/ right after?"
Solstice: No, we don't know when, and this is the 15th time someone has asked this question today. Please arrive at the requested time. Full attendance for the full time is required for participation. We are not going to work around the schedule of others since there will be at least 60 performers.
Question: "Why am I paying to perform?"
Solstice: Because it's a major pain in the ass and
takes several weeks of recovery from total burn-out and it is expensive
and hard work and is always potentially the last time we will ever do
something like it. If you don't feel priviledged to participate you
should seek elsewhere.
Question: "What happens with the profit from the performance?"
Solstice: It pays your teacher, it pays for the space use, and it pays for the weeks of recovery from brain-fry for your studio director: IF there is a profit. Our goal is to meet cost which takes a major effort. I welcome you to do the numbers for us :).
Question: "How can I help?" I will send a list of tasks in the class email.
As your director, I am honored to provide this opportunity, but your help is truly needed. The biggest rule that I request is "no drama". We have experienced such great performances in the past because all the performers are consciously aware of being grounded, self-aware, self-sufficient, and especially supportive other dancers. Negative discussion of other dancers, dancers costumes, instructors, or the performance itself is highly discourged, and we ask that you consciously refrain from stirring the pot. I promise that we are all, each of us, are doing our very very best. If you are not happy with something, then you should bring the issue to the studio staff in the form of an email. The stress that rises up when performance time comes creates a perfect ground for participants to bring in their baggage to be played out on their personal stage. Remember this in yourself and in others.
